Harrison Elementary  is proud to support military families. Please see below for resources for military families. Harrison has two points of contacts to help support military families. If you are looking for additional resources please feel free to contact the school social worker or principal.

Harrison Remembers

Representatives from Harrison Elementary School, participated in an event sponsored by American Legion Post 508 from East Chicago.  Flags were put on the graves of Veterans at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hammond Indiana.

Employment Opportunities

Military service members and their immediate family members are entitled to job interviews for job openings within the School City of East Chicago when they meet the minimum qualifications. In order to ensure qualifying service members and their immediate family members receive interview invitations, please notify the Human Resources Department prior to submitting an application. Veterans and Families Foundation
The Foundation is a national 501 © (3) non-profit, “a community service and support organization, founded and directed by Veterans, parents, grandparents, family members, employers, mental health professionals, academics, philanthropists and community leaders.” The site contains a multitude of useful resources, including links to videos, books and articles, an edited blog for returning veterans, and other useful resources.

National Mental Health America
This website, with resources for returning veterans to help facilitate a healthy and happy reunion with their families and friends, has sections on homecoming, coping with war, and coping with loss. It includes a page that outlines signs that it is time to seek help, such as long bouts of depression, frequent bouts of anxiety or panic, flashbacks and frequent nightmares, domestic violence/abuse, and past mental health problems or past trauma.

This 14/7 Resource for military members, spouses and families includes sections for each branch of the military, including the National Guard, their families, and service providers.

Indiana Department of Veteran’s Affairs – Military Family Relief Fund
The Military Family Relief Fund provides emergency assistance to help cover expenses up to $5,000 for such needs as food, medical supplies, transportation, and other family costs associated with deployment.

Harrison Students Participate in Veterans Day Remembrance Celebration

On November 10, 2021 select students from Harrison Elementary attended the City of East Chicago Veterans Day Remembrance Celebration. Students listened to several guest speakers, met many local Veterans and laid the wreath on the Veterans Memorial. 

Harrison Elementary Veterans Garden

Veterans Garden was planted around our school's American flag, contains garden flowers as well as native plants. The garden was planted by students, staff and community partners to honor past and current members of the armed forces.

 


Digital Media Club Interviews

During the 2021-22 School Year our school district has still been under strict Covid restrictions.  This limited our ability to host a Veteran's Day program. However, we did not let that stop us from honoring local veterans. Students from Harrison were able to participate in local activities and our own Digital Media club interviewed Veterans that work at Harrison and veterans from the local community.  You can watch those interviews in the links below.
